188 Stage Hero's Journey - Analysis Of The Ordinary Self, World Of The Oracle
Kal Bishop's 188 stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188+ stage template.
Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.
[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].
THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY
SYMBOLISM
There is far more symbolism in the most successful stories than is given credit. Symbolism communicates stages of the Journey and movement from one state to another. What is does is guide the audience in the required direction and convey subconscious messages.
Examples include:
Water. At the stage of the Near Death Experience, romantic lovers part in the rain (50 First Dates, 2004), protagonists are tortured with water (Green Mile, 1999), protagonists happen to be on vessels that sink (War of the Worlds, 2005) and Heroes are submerged underwater (Jaws, 1977). The role of water is ancient and works on the audience subconsciously; it signifies baptism / dirt to cleanliness / washing away the Old and emergence of the New Self.

ABRIDGED TIPS, EXCERPTS AND EXAMPLES:
*****Analysis of the Ordinary Self*****
This is another word for context. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), photos of 20’s and text explain when Bonnie and Clyde were born and that they were vicious criminals.
*****World of the Oracle*****
Like all the other New Domains the Hero has passed through, this is a place that has not been experienced before. Characteristics manifest themselves in a number of ways, including:
Marker. A physical marker, such as a door or river marks the World of the Oracle from the World of the Transformation.
Magical World. In keeping with the knowledge that the Oracle can provide, this is a unique and often magical world.
Obstacles. The journey to the Oracle may not be easy. Often the Oracle is guarded and overcoming the Guardians is prerequisite.
Wolves Clothing. The Hero et al often disguise themselves to pass obstacles.
New Creatures. The Oracle is surrounded by creatures that are unique to his or her World and gifts. In The Matrix (1999), the Oracle is surrounded by others with special abilities.
Warnings. Some of these New Creatures may be hostile. They signify warning - no Ordinary Man gets to meet the Oracle. The Hero is warned that, if he is an Ordinary Man, some terrible curse will befall him (or her). Often the Hero will be turned to stone or some lower creature or similar.
